I didn't mind it actually. Part one fell a little flat, but I think that was a combination of me adjusting to the new style and the fact that not a lot happened. Part two had some real funny bits and the story really started. It's hardly a new thing, but the fantasy-reality cross created some funny moments. I enjoyed a lot of the Blade Runner spoofs too. I actually thought there were too many, but I assumed somewhat that Naylor has expressed on many occasions that Red Dwarf was heavily inspired by the film at all these RD conventions that are still alive and well.
I think they were always going to struggle with a special/comeback. Quite a few people I know have expressed a real distaste for this latest effort. I believe a lot, (and I mean a lot) of people/fans have a rose-tinted view of Red Dwarf. This special has made me realise that RD is quite a nice/innocent comedy really. It's heavy on the sarcasm, but there's nothing seriously edgy about it at all. Nothing wrong with that, but my tastes have matured massively since I last watched (and laughed at loud to) a Red Dwarf episode.
Funniest part: Rimmer scanning the hyper-high-res photo for clues.
